Updating Assignments with ChatGPT

This professional development session is designed for educators who want to rethink and refresh their existing assignments using AI as a creative assistant. Over time, assignments can become stale, overly predictable, or vulnerable to AI misuse by students. This workshop tackles those challenges head-on by showing how ChatGPT can be used to strategically revise, reframe, and modernize your assessments—without compromising rigor or learning outcomes.

Whether you’re trying to introduce more variety, align with evolving course goals, or simply make your assignments more engaging, this course shows you how to collaborate with ChatGPT to make meaningful updates.

In this course, you will learn to:

Identify What Needs Refreshing – Reflect on why certain assignments may no longer be working as intended, whether due to overuse, predictability, student disengagement, or ease of AI-generated completion.

Use ChatGPT to Suggest and Test Revisions – Learn how to provide ChatGPT with a full assignment description and prompt it to generate fresh variations, new angles, or even different assignment formats. This includes text, audio, video, or collaborative options that still meet your learning objectives.

Prompt with Purpose – Discover the importance of context-rich prompts. You’ll practice crafting requests that clearly explain the learning goals, assignment purpose, and desired changes—resulting in higher-quality outputs from ChatGPT.

Experiment with Alternative Formats – Explore ways to adapt traditional assignments into formats such as podcasts, video reflections, digital stories, or infographics, using ChatGPT to help scaffold those formats for students.

Evaluate and Modify ChatGPT Suggestions – Not everything AI generates is ready to go. You’ll learn how to critically review ChatGPT’s responses, deciding what’s useful, what needs editing, and what should be discarded.

Update Rubrics for New Formats – Use ChatGPT to quickly generate or revise grading rubrics that align with the newly updated assignment formats and expectations, ensuring clarity and consistency in evaluation.

Improve Assignment Integrity and Student Ownership – Learn how assignment variety and authenticity can reduce opportunities for academic dishonesty while increasing engagement, creativity, and real-world relevance.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Confidently use ChatGPT to help revise and adapt existing assignments

  • Introduce flexible formats that support differentiated instruction

  • Align assignment updates with both pedagogical goals and evolving student needs

  • Promote deeper learning while maintaining academic integrity in an AI-aware world

Whether you’re updating one assignment or rethinking an entire assessment strategy, this course provides a structured, practical framework for working with AI—so you can spend less time stuck in a document and more time designing for learning.
